I feel like this is a very common trend for most freshman. Not knowing what you want to be is a very American thing and I think its great that you were able to discover your career by taking various classes. I think that for anyone who is unsure of their major or career should try and fulfill their basic classes in different subjects.
I guess uncertainty towards the future and confusion were my biggest issues when I was a freshman. It took me a couple of years to figure out what exactly was what I wanted to do with my life. But at the end friends and teachers lead me to what I really wanted to pursue. Its great to listen to as much advice as possible but at the end I felt that I did what I wanted to do and what was the best for me, ENGLISH MAJOR!!
My biggest fear before I came to college was socially based, I came to college without knowing anybody at the entire school and I was afraid I wasn't going to find a group to fit in with. Leaving all my highschool friends and starting over was definitely a scary experience, but the fact was that college is such a large diverse place that you are bound to find a group a great people and friends as long as you put yourself out there and aren't afraid to be yourself.
College presented few "real" challenges, because I knew most of the people attending (most were from my high school). I think the fear of not being accepted socially amongst peers is one of the primary concerns among individuals. My own personal experiences led to academic concerns, mainly getting into law school. We will all have to wait and see (fingers crossed)!
I have a couple fears about college. I get scared by the cost, because me and my family worry that we won't have enough money to pay for my education. I also worry about not knowing what to do in my future, I've had a couple of thoughts with Web Graphic Design and Multimedia Design and Developement; I'm not even sure if I want to pursue with those majors. One last factor that worries me about college is not thinking I will be ready for the work that there is to come with the courses. I can barely take my AP Government class right now and how will I be able to take courses in college if there all supposedly mentioned as AP. I would try harder than before and I would have the motivation but it would be a long and difficult experience in life.
Hey Ervine,
I think you have highlighted a few fears that many students your age struggle with. Cost is always an issue, especially with today's economy. Fortunately, there are many scholarships you can look into. If you played sports or are part of a team/club at your high school many colleges offer scholarships if you continue to play in college. Just being on the team can cut your tuition in half or more. Many of my friends during freshman year of college had no idea what they wanted to be or what areas even interested them. Because colleges have a general education requirement that spans many different subject areas you will have plenty of time to "experiment" around with different majors/subjects. Ervine, I never took any AP classes in high school and many of friends that did take AP classes admit that most of the freshman classes are easier than AP courses in high school. So I wouldn't worry too much about college being too difficult academically (especially if you are already taking honor classes). Hope this helps!
the one thing i worry is mostly how am i going to pay for all the college bills. it doesn't seem that there is never any easy way out.
Jeannette, you bring up a fear that the majority of college students are worried about. Working while in school can be a good option to help ease the financial burden. It can also help you when you apply for a real job, as many college students that I know have never had a job while in college. Likewise, if you decide to apply for a graduate program having job experience can really help. Besides this, trying to earn special scholarships or rewards can also help ease the financial difficulties of college. Its amazing how much money is out there to be had if you look in the right places and take the effort to apply. If you need to get loans try and get government ones that are designed for students. I do agree, though, that especially with the current state of the economy there is no easy way out of financial hardship.
My biggest concerns about college is that if I'm ready to maintain this level of education or not
my biggest fear of college is also not knowing what will my career be and i don't want to waste money
Brenda, you make an excellent point. I have had many friends in college that had no idea what they wanted to do, let alone major in. Most colleges have excellent counselors that will be more than willing to help you find some direction in your life. I actually just had a presentation yesterday in my Senior English Seminar Class and we received all kinds of different information about career opportunities with an English Major. If you check out the career center at any college, there are more than enough resources available to help give you direction. I wouldn't worry too much about finding a career, be more focused on doing well and having a great time in college. Best of luck!
