Family Background:My father (from American Samoa) and mother both came to California in the mid-70's from Hawai'i. Of course, the change in physical space was predicated on job and educational opportunities. Eight children later, I was born at Stanford Hospital.
Pre College Education:Brentwood Oaks, Edison
McNair, Edison McNair Extension, Green Oaks, Menlo Oaks Visual and
Performing Arts Magnet School, Eastside College Preparatory
School
College Education:Stanford University - English
(Creative Writing), Psychology (Developmental), Education
(Secondary)
"Aha" Moment:My "Aha!" moment took place as a
junior in high school. I was preparing for a debate on the
controversial topic of race-based Affirmative Action in college
admissions. It was after this experience that I knew I would
succeed in college.
Biggest Challenge To get to College: East Palo
Alto, CA, has not been home to many successes, especially academic.
I was always expected to fail, and statistics tried to define my
experience as a student.
Biggest Challenge In College:I was my biggest
challenge. I knew that nothing would get in my way of getting my
degree but myself!
Favorite Mentor: My mother is my favorite mentor!
She has helped me to look at every challenge as an opportunity to
grow.
Favorite Teacher:I can't choose one - there were so many teachers during my high school career (and a few while in grade school) who I am eternally indebted to.
Favorite Author/Book: My favorite author right now is Sia Figiel. I am a huge fan of her book "Where We Once Belonged".
