Profile Information

What kind of member are you?
College Student
High School Education (Name of School, Graduation Year)
High school diploma (South Lake Tahoe High School), Santa Clara University 2011 Biology and Spanish double major
Are you or your siblings the first in your family to attend college?
Yes
What are the biggest challenges you faced or are facing as a high school student? How did you overcome those obstacles?
I am a first generation Latino student and the biggest challenge I faced when perusing an education at a 4-year-university was the lack the informational resources and economic support. Fortunately, my high school had an AVID program that gave me a lot of the information on standardized tests, general requirements, and how to apply to college in general that I needed to get apply and get accepted into a college of my choice. I also found that my counselor and school's College and Career center was another pool of useful information that my parents couldn't give me because they had never been through the college application process in the United States. Once I had applied, the only thing preventing me from going to school was the financial burden that tuition would place on my family. I started applying for grants and local merit merit based scholarships early winter and made sure that i filled the FAFSA as soon as it was available online.
What are your educational goals? What are you doing to reach those goals?
As of right now, my goals for higher education are still uncertain. Before coming to college, I was set on going to Medical School, which is why I am a biology major, but over the past three years I have come to realize that medicine is not my true passion. Although I no longer have a "set path" after graduation, I want to keep my options in the field of Biology by applying to Grad schools and working to get my masters and maybe even a Ph D. I just need a little time to figure out what i want to do with biology.
What do you like to do for fun? (Select all that apply)
Art, Dancing, History, Mathematics, Movies, Science, Sleeping, Technology, Video Games
