What kind of member are you?: College Student

High School Education (Name of School, Graduation Year): Santa Clara University, 2012, Sociology

Are you or your siblings the first in your family to attend college?: Yes

What are the biggest challenges you faced or are facing as a high school student? How did you overcome those obstacles?: During my freshman year in high school, my mom was deported. It was really hard to take over her responsibilites at home and attend school and work at the same time, but I overcame thaqt hardship and if anything it made me a stronger person and more determined to succeed.

What are your educational goals? What are you doing to reach those goals?: I am currently attending Santa Clara University (LOVE it!!) and I plan to graduate in 2012 and then go on to Law School and become an immigration lawyer. I am very passionate about immigration issues because of the expereinces my family and I have been through. I have taken some courses that give some insight on immigration and have also worked at the Katherine and Alexander Community Law Center as a translator for the immigration clinic and wroker's rights clinic.

What advice would you give others to be successful in high school and college?: Time management is very VERY important. You have to know how to set your priorities. I worked three jobs at the same time at one point in high school and the only way it didn't affect my education was because I managed my time well. You also must stay motivated and determined to succeed. There are so many fun experiences to live throughout your college experience, but you always have to keep in mind the main reason you're in college, and for me that is to obtain an education that will allow you to move forward in life and achieve some goals your parents were never able to accomplish and to set an example to younger siblings.
