Adding Classes: A Challenge Worth Taking!

Hi Everyone!I know fall quarter or semester is about to wrap up. Good luck making it through final projects and tests! Almost there and a nice long break is right around the corner! When you come back to school it's new classes and new faces. I was thinking about what it's like to return to school and have to sort out a new schedule of classes that, more often than not, doesn't work out on the first try. The first weeks of the new quarter or semester can be so hectic with trying to add classes.…See More

Get to know your professors - they can help you...A LOT!

Hi Everyone, Happy November!I was thinking through all the things that I did in college that really helped me to get to where I am now. One thing that stands out far above others is the connections I made with my professors. It is so so important to get to know your college professors. WHY??1) So that you feel comfortable approaching them for help. My freshman year of college I studied so hard and sometimes still did not get it! I was afraid to talk to my professors because I didn't know them…See More

What kind of member are you?
College Grad
High School Education (Name of School, Graduation Year)
Cal Poly, 2007, Graphic Communication, Spanish
Are you or your siblings the first in your family to attend college?
Yes
What are the biggest challenges you faced or are facing as a high school student? How did you overcome those obstacles?
I was a really shy kid in high school. I really pushed myself to be in situations that were out of my comfort zone so that I could grow and gain more self-confidence. I joined the varsity tennis team and found out that I actually was pretty good at tennis! Having a sport that I belonged to helped a lot.
What are your educational goals? What are you doing to reach those goals?
In high school I had the goal of going to college. I achieved that goal and graduated a couple of years ago from Cal Poly. At the time I graduated from college I was so happy to be done with school...so I thought. Turns out, a couple years later and I'm ready to go back. I'm working hard to get experience in teaching so that I am sure that's what I want to do. Then, I plan to go back to school to get my teaching credential.
What advice would you give others to be successful in high school and college?
Don't ever tell yourself you can't do something. If you think you can't, then you really can't. If you think you can, then you can. I had some classes in college that horrified me. I wanted to drop out because I thought I'd never pass. However, I didn't want to "give up" so I stuck with them and they turned out to be some of the best classes I ever took and they taught me that I could really succeed if I put my mind to it and worked extra hard!
What do you like to do for fun? (Select all that apply)
Art, Camping, Cooking, Exercise, Music, Reading, Sports, Traveling

Hi everyone! This is my first blog post as a Zoomz college mentor. I'm very excited to be a part of this online community for students inspired to go to college!

A little about me:

I was born and raised in Santa Cruz. It's where both sides of my family come from so I was lucky to grow up with supportive family all around me all the time. I went to Soquel High and I was a super shy kid but high school was the time when I began to branch out and reach…
