Profile Information

What kind of member are you?
College Student, Expert Parent
High School Education (Name of School, Graduation Year)
The Art Insitute, 2011, Graphic Design
Are you or your siblings the first in your family to attend college?
Yes
What are the biggest challenges you faced or are facing as a high school student? How did you overcome those obstacles?
I am the oldest sibling in my household as well as the only girl. I was not only working at KFC 25-30 hours a week, to help out the family, I was also the live-in nanny to my 4 younger brothers. Don't get me wrong I adore my baby brothers but at 16 I just wanted to have fun! I didn't party, I couldn't join sports or clubs, no, I had to go straight home to pick up my brothers from daycare and watch them until my strong-willed single mother came home from work. I helped with homework, took them baths, fed them and had them ready for bed by the time my mom got home from her second job. Then it was my turn to go to work. Sometimes my homework didn't get done but that was the price I had to pay to help my family keep a roof over our heads. There isn't a solution to this obstacle except self motivation and a strong desire to want to succeed and be a good example. I fought every day to instill in my brothers that life happens and our mother tried her hardest to do the best for us. I tried, and still try, to teach them that she struggles because she never finished school and if she had and went on to college she wouldn't have to struggle so much. Strength. In a situation like this and most others, that's all you need is to be strong. We can get through things if we want to, if we fight to.
What are your educational goals? What are you doing to reach those goals?
My educational goals are to finish school. After high school I started college 3 times and dropped out 3 times! I am done giving up. I have two daughters as well as my 3 brothers to continue setting an example for. The oldest joined the army after high school. I lost the fight in me a while ago when I decided things got too hard, but now it's time to gain my strength back. I know I will finish school this time.
What advice would you give others to be successful in high school and college?
We can't do things because other people want us to do them, we have to do things because WE want to do them. If YOU want to be successful, If YOU want to proud of yourself, then YOU have to want it!! Only we can make ourselves happy. Life happens and we have to think of it as just that, Life. And nobody wants to suck at life. So we endure, we overcome!
What do you like to do for fun? (Select all that apply)
Art, Camping, Cooking, Creative Writing, Dancing, Exercise, History, Movies, Music, Photography, Reading, Shopping, Sleeping, Technology, Television, Video Games

Wanted to see if I can get your help on something. We created a survey to get feedback on the community and was hoping you could take 10 min to take it. If you complete it, we will enter you in a drawing for a $25 iTunes card.

Here it is:
