Financial Aid Basics

I was the first in my big family to go to college, so I know how confusing it can be. I want to give you the kind of help I needed. Before you can pick up some of that money called "financial aid," you need to know what it looks like, who's giving it away, and how you can get some. So I'll start with the basics about scholarships, grants, work-study, and loans – all different types of financial aid.Types of financial aid Financial aid means any help you and your family get paying for college. What kind of member are you?
Expert
High School Education (Name of School, Graduation Year)
UC San Diego, 1972, plus graduate study at SUNY Binghampton in NY
Are you or your siblings the first in your family to attend college?
Yes
What are the biggest challenges you faced or are facing as a high school student? How did you overcome those obstacles?
Money - I come from a family of 12 kids, and my parents couldn't afford to pay for college. I was lucky enough to earn scholarships to pay for my college (plus UC was cheaper then!)
What are your educational goals? What are you doing to reach those goals?
To help others the way I was helped. I've run the College & Career Center at Mountain View High School for 9 years, and especially enjoy working with the AVID kids here. I hope to help through zoomz as well.
What advice would you give others to be successful in high school and college?
Don't be afraid to try something new. You may not be great the first time you try it, but if it interests you, keep going! This could be what you were meant to do. Test your ideas about possible careers (and college majors) by working or volunteering in that area. Talk to lots of people about their education and jobs - you'll learn useful things and people will enjoy talking to you.

Hey Laurel!

I want to say thanks for being a great member of Zoomz. We really appreciate your dedication!

Wanted to see if I can get your help on something. We created a survey to get feedback on the community and was hoping you could take 10 min to take it. If you complete it, we will enter you in a drawing for a $25 iTunes card.

Here it is:
