What is the Best Halloween Costume EVER?

It's costume time again!  And for some people, that means figuring out what they want to dress up as.  So, if you had the ability to be whatever you wanted to be, what would your Halloween costume…Continue

A Cautionary Tale

Yesterday, I took two of my roommates to the Emergency Room.  One roommate had a sprained ankle from running down a hill, and the other roommate had cut herself on a glass and needed stitches. Both injuries could have been avoided if they'd been more careful, but sometimes, karma just decides to come and be evil. So, what should you do if you find yourself hurt? One, DON'T PANIC.  Panicking has the potential to make yourself worse.  A little bit of panic is inevitable, but don't freak out. …See More

"Very true.  College is a place to learn about expanding.  In high school, the teachers act like they have most of the answers, but in college, a lot of the teachers admit they don't know everything.  Everyone learns something new…"

Saving your GPA

Sometimes you have to take classes that have nothing to do with your major.  These are usually your breadth requirements, or general education requirements, and most colleges have them. These classes are designed to increase your knowledge of subjects outside what you want to study.  And while a lot of them can be interesting, some of them can be annoying.  Other times, you are simply too busy with other classes and don't want to focus on these requirements. If you have the option, sometimes you…See More

Illnesses and Finals

I am sick, and it's the week before finals week.  Which, as most students know, sucks because (a) I'm sick, so I don't feel well, and (b) I still have to study for my finals, which are next week.  This is not the first finals' week I've been sick, though. So, you get sick and have finals.  What do you do? One of my favorite helping habits is sleep.  Sleeping helps your body fight being sick, so getting plenty of rest is a good thing.  Getting plenty of rest in general also helps your ability to…See More

Teachers Are Human

Teachers are human.  That's something that a lot of people don't realize in high school.  Teachers are often seen simply as authority figures, and yes, they control how the classroom is run, but they are also flesh and blood and hormones. You make a teacher mad, they are more likely to punish or yell at you. Do something nice for a teacher, and you will make a good impression on the teacher. If a teacher is having a bad day, it may take fewer problems or disturbances than normal before they…See More

Weekend Classes

Weekends.  Usually, you can use them to work, hang out with friends, or catch up on homework you've gotten behind on because you just HAD to see the new episode of American Idol.  But since when are there weekend classes? There are times when the only available classes are on the weekends.  This is rare, but it does occur, especially in specialty classes, like scientific diving, or in classes that have too many students trying to obtain a spot, like physics labs.  If it's a regular class, this…See More

UC Santa Cruz, 2012, Marine Biology
Are you or your siblings the first in your family to attend college?
No
What are the biggest challenges you faced or are facing as a high school student? How did you overcome those obstacles?
I had to face teachers I didn't like, sometimes do multiple assignments for multiple classes that were all due the same day, and I had to find friends. I found many people whom I became friends with through common interests and clubs. I dealt with teachers I didn't like by asking them polite questions if I had one and otherwise not being disruptive in class. If I had too many assignments due at the same time, I started early to finish them, and I would ask some teachers if I could have them due at a later date; most teachers were willing to help.
What are your educational goals? What are you doing to reach those goals?
My education goals are to get the best grades I can and take all the classes I am able to take for my major. To reach this goal, I am studying hard for all my classes, getting help outside the classroom, and signing up for as many classes as I can without taking on too much.
What advice would you give others to be successful in high school and college?
Know how you study. Some students are audio learners, so lecture really helps. Other students are more visual, so they need to read the book before they understand something. Also, most people cannot cram before a test and do well; begin studying the material early so you don't have to cram. I can only cram so much, so I start studying for a test at least a week ahead of time so I don't have to stress out.
What do you like to do for fun? (Select all that apply)
Cooking, Creative Writing, Dancing, Mathematics, Music, Photography, Science, Sleeping, Television, Video Games
