It's not just grades that matter?!

Universities aren't just look for an amazing GPA when they're looking at your application. Now you're probably thinking, I spend all my time studying to get great grades and now I have to do more?! I'm sure you've all heard that extracurricular activities are important for university admission. Admissions officers want to see that you are a well-rounded student, that you are capable of doing more than just school work. So then the question becomes, what kinds of stuff am I supposed to be doing?…See More

Finals stressing you out?

It's finals season for some people and getting real close to finals season for others! I go to UC Berkeley and we're on a semester system (instead of quarters) so it is finals week this week. I just took one final, two more left!  Everyone knows finals can be really stressful. Having to remember an entire course worth of material for each class, plus every exam is in the same week!? Sounds impossible right? But we've all done it and we know we can get through it. Doesn't make it any less…See More

Choosing classes

Choosing classes in college can be both exciting and daunting. Especially if you go to a large university, the seemingly endless amount of course offerings can make it difficult to figure out what to take and what to major in. I encourage you to read through the course catalog for your school and see what departments and classes are offered, even if you know what you want to major in. Especially in your first couple years, it can be fun to take classes that aren't related to your major just to…See More

How to study in college

One of the hardest parts of the transition from high school to college is the difference in how classes are structured. In high school, every class gives you homework that are usually assignments to turn in. It helps hold you accountable for keeping up with class and the reading. In college, professors don't do that- they assign reading and expect you to keep up with the material. There will be no assignments to turn in for most classes. Your grade is determined by exams (midterms and the…See More

City of San Jose Youth Commission and how they helped me get to college

As I'm sure most of you have heard, extracurricular activities are extremely important when applying to college. It shows that you have interests and passions outside of schoolwork and that you are a well-rounded individual. But sometimes it can be difficult to figure out what you want to be involved in. If you are interested in helping out your community in a variety of ways or getting an inside look at how in local government works, I strongly recommend you look into joining your city's youth…See More

Winter break!

One of the best things about college, depending on where you go, is that winter break is longer than it was in high school. In high school two weeks just seems way too short right? Before you know it, Christmas is over and so is New Year's and suddenly you're faced with the prospect of school starting again. If you go to a college that's on semesters (not quarters) usually you'll have a whole month off for winter break. Sounds awesome right? It is! But if you don't find a way to keep yourself…See More

Graduate school?

As I've mentioned before, I am currently in my 3rd year of college. While it feels like yesterday that I was first moving to Berkeley and starting my first year of college, it is now time for me to start thinking about what I want to do after I graduate. I think that is the biggest challenge for me as a junior. I know what field I would like to work in, but the most basic question is, grad school or work? I am a psychology major and my end goal is to work as a psychologist/therapist and…See More

Stress Management

Hi guys, I'm back! As I mentioned in my introductory blog post, I am currently in my third year in college. Recently I've been thinking about all the different lessons I've learned since coming to Cal. I think during my second year here, the most important lesson I learned is stress management. The first year of college, you are more focused on your classes and adjusting to college life and, for a lot of people, being away from home. You may get involved with extracurricular activities but it…See More
