College Education (Name of School, Graduation Year, Major)
Santa Clara University, 2013, Sociology
Are you or your siblings the first in your family to attend college?
Yes
What are the biggest challenges you faced or are facing as a high school student? How did you overcome those obstacles?
The biggest challenge I faced as a high school student was my freshman year. I transitioned not only from middle to high school but from the public education system to a private one. It was one of the biggest challenges I have been through. I was moved to a school where I knew no one, and not only that but no one around was like me. My school, Archbishop Mitty was predominately white with an extremely low percentage of Latinos. I begged and pleaded my mom to let me transfer to the nearest public school by my house but she asked me to at least give it a chance. Nonetheless, she never knew exactly what I went through. In every class I was the only Latina and it made me feel extremely isolated. I was slowly losing my voice in my classes because my opinion always seemed to be the opposite of what everyone thought. It made it hard for me to say how I felt because no one would back up me up. Eventually, I became friends with some of the other Latino students and realized that going to Mitty would eventually help me with my goal of going to a 4-year university. I gave private school a chance and in the end, I wouldn't change a thing. Persistence and looking at the bigger picture are what kept me going. I learned so many things at MItty and now that I look back on it I'm glad i stuck it thru.
What are your educational goals? What are you doing to reach those goals?
This past summer summer along with my side job at a local theater I volunteered at a summer math program. At this program I was a teacher's assistant to an Algebra 1 class having about 30 middle/upcoming high school students. Upon my return to Santa Clara University this year as a sophomore, I finally declared my major: Sociology with an emphasis in child development and a double minor in Urban Education and Studio Art! The students in the algebra class this past summer really inspired me to follow this path. I hope to be teaching for a couple of years once I receive my teaching credentials from the graduate program at Santa Clara. From their I would like to eventually become a principal, or even a superintendent so that I can help fix the bigger issues in our societies current schooling systems. This upcoming summer of 2011 I am going to be a teaching assistant for the MAP-SUTA middle school math acceleration program fulfilling my passion for working with younger students. I plan on pursuing a career in education and know that by working side by side with a teacher I will definitely benefit from it in the future. In order to reach this goal of becoming a teacher I have been doing a ton of community service in schools just so that I can gain the experience necessary so that when it's my turn to teach, I know exactly what I'm doing! (:
What advice would you give others to be successful in high school and college?
Throughout my days as a teaching assistant i have seen many things that have sadden me in the overall attitude of students. Unfortunately, more and more high school students have a negative attitude about school. The way I see it is: your already forced to be in school by the law so why not make the best out of it! Many just waste there time going to school being there physically they may be there but not mentally. I would advice them to give put in some effort. You'd be surprised to see how far a little effort could go! When students show interest in what they are learning more teacher's are willing to help them out. You must believe in yourself for others to believe in you... not only that but I would advise students to realize that what they are doing is going to affect their own future, not anyone else's. If your going to do something, do it for yourself, for your future and overall well being.
