Yusuf Alam Dealing with Family Pressure

Pressure from your family can be tough to handle, because they are the people who love you and care for you the most. Naturally, you would want to make them proud of you, and not disappoint them. However, sometimes what your family wants isn’t always the best advice for you.

When family members tell you to go to Harvard and become a lawyer,…

Mary Kane Deadlines: Tricks for Remembering Them

Most things have some sort of time limit on them, like the food in your fridge, the amount of time in a day, or that pesky application that's due in two days that you haven't even started on.  Just recently, I knew I had an application due on January 15th, but I didn't remember which application it was.  So, I did the wrong application, which wasn't due for a month, then the day before the application was due, I checked the due dates.  I did manage to get the right application in on time,…

Virginia Jimenez My senior year in high school

Like any other senior I was excited to graduate and could not wait for the day to come. At the same time I was worry because I decided to go to college my junior year which gave me no time to get ready to apply to colleges. So even though I knew I had a little bit of time I decided to apply to San Jose State and San Francisco State. A couple of months after applying I found out that my application was not going to be considered unless I fixed the D I had in my freshmen English class. I went…

Mary Kane PE Classes

Ever wanted to learn how to fence?  Or how about yoga?  Or maybe underwater basket weaving is more your thing.

Most colleges offer some sort of physical education department, whether it's through classes or a gym that's open to all students.  There's almost always something for everyone.  And while they may not be free classes, they usually are much cheaper than classes offered outside the university.

For example, I am a scuba diver.  I love diving, and…

Kai Fujioka A second chance

So I recently got into a car accident while driving home from school. It was a route I was very familiar with and although I've never had problems with traffic before, I struck the back of a Subaru Outback.

During those moments, which were most likely seconds but felt like hours, I did what most people probably do when they have a life-threatening experience-I reflected on my life. It sounds cheesy, it sounds cliche, but it happened.

What I realized was that i missed a…

Virginia Jimenez Senior year in high school

It is your last year and some of you might think this is the easiest year because you are ready to graduate. All you need to do this year is to pass your classes. You are wrong I felt like my senior year was the most difficult one from all the 4 years because you need to pass all your classes then finish all the senior projects your teachers give you, then if you are applying to colleges you need to do the applications, then if you haven’t done the ACT or the SAT you also need to take one of…

Thompson Ly Greek life

Many students enter college with the prospects of becoming a part of the campus Greek life.  We hear about it all the time in movies, TV shows, commercials, etc. about the many fun and integrating experiences that a sorority or a fraternity can offer. These groups are said to create close bonds, friendships, and networking opportunities that enrich the college experience. When you enter a typical college campus, you will see many Greek banners, stands, or posters adorning the walls which…

Virginia Jimenez My junior year in high school

As a junior I went to CCOC to learn more about medical careers so I enrolled in the health occupation class. To get enroll in CCOC I had to do many things the first thing I did was to go to a field trip to the school to learn about the classes they offer. After the field trip I had to talk to the person in the career center to make sure I could get in because classes get full really quick. There are many school districts that do this program so there a lot of students trying to get in to the…

Yusuf Alam Reading: tips to help make it easier

As a student you’ll definitely have a lot of reading to do no matter what classes you take, and if you wait too long to get started it will pile up very quickly. But there are ways to make reading faster and easier.

It’s a bad idea to just dive into a textbook from page one without previewing the book first. If you’re not sure what the chapter is about and where it’s going, you can get lost and lose focus easily. Most books are usually divided up into chapters and placed in a…

Virginia Jimenez Junior year in high school

You are probably excited to start your junior year because once you are done with this year you will only have a year until you graduate. So junior year should be a piece of cake you have been in high school for two years and you have made it so far. Like I said before make sure you meet your a-g requirements to graduate and to get into college if that’s your plan after graduation.  By now you should know if you pass the CAHSEE which is a math and English test that is taken your sophomore…

Yusuf Alam Tips to make classes fun & interesting

One really good way to make classes fun is to pick great teachers that fit your style. There are lots of professors that do a good job of teaching their subject, but some may have a style that fits better with you than others. History, for example, always seemed boring to me because it was presented as a bunch of names and dates. But in college I found a History professor with a great sense of humor who presented his lectures like a stand-up comedy routine. During his lectures he would…

Mary Kane Roommates and Chores...

One thing that almost every group of roommates goes through is what to do about chores.  Whether you're in the dorms or in an apartment, you may have to compromise how you keep your room.  While I don't like leaving food wrappings all over the place, I do have a tendency to leave papers scattered everywhere on the floor.  And since most of my roommates have been a lot more organized than me, I almost always get teased for it.  But since I do it in my own space, they can't actually yell at me…

Thompson Ly Benefits from choosing your own classes

One of my favorite things about going to college is the opportunity to pick out the classes I needed to take. Unlike high school, all college students have the decision of choosing their class schedules and the professors/teachers they want to take the course with. Some of you can relate to me, but I often had one teacher in high school that was not teaching at their full ability. This frustrated me a lot because I did not learn and felt it was a waste of time.

When I started college,…

I want to wish everyone a happy holidays and a wonderful new year!  May you all have a spectacular time with friends and family, and may the new year bring you new and exciting prospects!

As the new year comes, many people participate in the idea of creating a New Year's Resolution.  People come up with many different ideas, from going to a gym every day, to posting something every day on Facebook, to being nicer to a sibling, to connecting with that estranged relative they…

Virginia Jimenez My sophomore year in high school

My sophomore year was not like everyone else the reason being that this is when I had my daughter. I found out I was pregnant when I was finishing my second semester of my freshmen year. Everything was the same until the summer came. I moved in with my boyfriend’s family because my family didn’t agree with my decision. So that summer I started the new school because how I had mention before I got an F in biology and a D in English so this is when I fix my biology grade. I think this helped…

Yusuf Alam Staying Healthy When You’re in College

  _________________________

Under Pressure...

When we’re under pressure with midterms and papers to write, the last thing many of us college students think about is getting some exercise. Instead, we try to save as much time as possible, eating fast food and drinking coffee, soda, and sugary energy drinks to keep us awake at night. It may feel like you’re saving time in the short term, but in reality you’re damaging your…
